Neuronline Podcast: How to Navigate the Ups and Downs of Publishing
The Perils of Publishing, Neuronline’s first-ever podcast, gives a firsthand look at the excitement, challenges, and opportunities that neuroscientists face when trying to publish their research. Episodes are available to SfN members and the public on Neuronline and iTunes.
“I’m so excited to host SfN’s Neuronline podcast series and dive deep into the experiences that so many of us encounter when publishing,” said Paula Croxson, assistant professor of neuroscience and psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “The series should be of particular interest to trainees who are trying to get comfortable with the process of publishing papers — which can often be confusing and overwhelming — or reviewing them.”
The six-part podcast tells the story of two neuroscientists at the University of Pittsburgh who publish a paper about anxiety in JNeurosci and subsequently receive notable media attention. Bita Moghaddam, a principal investigator and experienced author, and Junchol Park, a trainee and novice author, each recount their unique perspectives as they walk listeners through their journey, from study conception to publication and beyond.
Throughout the podcast series, JNeurosci, Neuron, and Cell editors (Jim Knierim, Katja Brose, and Mirna Kvajo, respectively) provide commentary and offer valuable tips to understand journal processes, handle difficult issues that may arise, and ultimately, be successful authors.
