Award for Education in Neuroscience Presented to John Nicholls
SAN DIEGO — The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) presented the Award for Education in Neuroscience to John G. Nicholls, FRS, DSc, MD, PhD, during Neuroscience 2010, SfN’s annual meeting and the world’s largest source of emerging news on brain science and health. The prize, which includes $5,000, recognizes individuals with a distinguished career who have made outstanding contributions to neuroscience research and education.
“It is a privilege to present this award to Dr. Nicholls,” said Michael E. Goldberg, MD, president of SfN. “His novel research and continued dedication to neuroscience training on a global level demonstrates the depth of his commitment to the field.”
John Nicholls’ career of more than 50 years has been committed to advancing the field of neuroscience through research and supporting upcoming young scientists. His work on synaptic transmission and regeneration of the nervous system after injury has been central to the development and use of invertebrate systems in neuroscience research. Nicholls is one of three authors of the seminal textbook, From Neuron to the Brain.
Nicholls has dedicated significant effort to promoting the growth of neuroscience education throughout the world, particularly for underfunded students. His collaboration with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) as the founding director of the IBRO Visiting Lecture Team has provided assistance to promising researchers in more than a dozen countries. Nicholls has also served as a trustee for the Grass Foundation.
He is currently a professor at the International School for Advanced Studies in Italy and is studying the neural mechanisms underlying respiration.
The Society for Neuroscience is an organization of more than 40,000 researchers and clinicians who study the brain and nervous system.
