Neuronline Spotlight: Revisiting Neuroscience 2016 Events

During the Celebration of Women in Neuroscience keynote speech, Victoria Puig shares what it was like to work abroad in the United States and then return home to Spain. Puig, a group leader at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park and Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, also offers advice on how to maintain networks, build leadership skills, acclimate to different environments, and transition to new career phases.

This panel discusses the proven benefits of positive institutional public communication and openness about animal research, as well as strategies to engage with institutions to deliver those messages. Panelists are:

• Kirk Leech, executive director of the European Animal Research Association
• J. David Jentsch, Empire Innovation Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University
• John Morrison, director of the California National Primate Research Center
• Carrie Wolinetz, associate director for science policy and director of the Office of Science Policy at NIH
• Mar Sanchez, chair of SfN’s Committee on Animals in Research and affiliate scientist at the Yerkes National Primate Center

Following up on the 2016 Neuron paper, “Neuroscience Training for the 21^st Century,” panelists examine how to best train and retain a talented workforce, strengthen mentoring relationships, and more. Panelists are:

• Elisabeth Van Bockstaele, dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Professional Studies at Drexel University College of Medicine and chair of the SfN Neuroscience Training Committee
• Walter Koroshetz, director of NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
• Michael Friedlander, vice president for health sciences and technology at Virginia Tech
• Edda Thiels, associate professor of neurobiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
