Science Builds Foundation for Treating Brain Disease
Writing in the East Bay Times, Drs. William J. Martin and Eric J. Nestler urge for grassroots efforts to support federal funding of biomedical research.
Noting that the Bay Area is a world leader for brain research, they write: "We can strive to apply to brain diseases the same approach followed in cancer: Begin by understanding the causes with fundamental animal and cell research and translate this understanding into new therapies. Sustained progress against brain diseases requires strong, consistent federal investment in basic science. As we continue efforts to support clinical care now, we must also invest in research that deepens understanding of brain function. Only then can we translate our knowledge into new treatments for future generations to lead healthier lives."
