SfN Supports a 10 Percent Increase in Funding for NIH

SfN stands with Research!America in recognizing the critical importance of robust, sustained funding for biomedical research and basic science. President Obama and members of Congress continue to show strong support for basic research and neuroscience through last year’s $2 billion increase to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Robust, consistent, and reliable, NIH funding is critical to the success of these initiatives and to the ongoing research already being conducted with NIH support. SfN believes a budget increase of at least 10 percent for NIH over FY2016 funding levels will provide the necessary funding to continue critical research efforts across the neuroscience field, including the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative. A 10 percent increase, including an increase of at least $2.4 billion to the base budget, will restore lost purchasing power, rebuild a solid foundation for sustained progress, and assure that the benefits of NIH-funded research convey broadly to future generations of researchers.
