Fall 2018

  • Richard Huganir
Message From the President: Science Is Driven by Curiosity

Applying knowledge in innovative ways is essential to discovery and progress. This starts with curiosity. Our desire to solve mysteries ultimately helps us to build that knowledge, making it available for novel interpretations and applications.

  • Joshua Gordon, MD, PhD, (left) and Walter J. Koroshetz, MD (right)
Q&A: NINDS and NIMH Directors Discuss BRAIN Initiative

Walter J. Koroshetz, MD, and Joshua Gordon, MD, PhD, are coauthors of the JNeurosci paper “The State of the NIH BRAIN Initiative,” which describes scientific advances and identifies future directions for research.

  • Attendees at SfN’s annual meeting can make connections anywhere — in lecture halls, on the poster floor, and at special networking events.
New Science and Networking Drive Neuroscience 2018

More than 30,000 neuroscientists and clinician-scientists from across the globe are expected to gather in California for this year’s annual meeting, November 3–7 at the San Diego Convention Center.

  • "Career Development Topics: A Networking Event” is one of many events offered at SfN’s annual meeting that encourages attendees to collaborate and share experiences that can help them in their careers.
SfN Helps Neuroscientists to Succeed in Any Career Path

SfN’s training resources enhance training opportunities for early career scientists that prepare them for both academic and nonacademic career options.

  • Neuroscience advocates hosted an “autism awareness” event at a Charleston Riverdogs minor league baseball game. This is one example of ways advocates can increase awareness of brain research in their local community.
Advocates Increase Engagement With Policymakers and the Public

Creating open dialogue with the public and policymakers regarding the impact federal policies have on the discovery process helps science advocates to increase support for biomedical research.

  • Erich Jarvis (c), NSF Director France A. Córdova (r)
Presidential Award Recognizes Value of Neuroscience Scholars Program

The award recognizes outstanding efforts of mentors in encouraging the next generation of innovators and developing a science and engineering workforce that reflects the diverse talent of America.
